021: In the Autumn

She came to our town every year, about the Autumnal Equinox. She wore brown furs and magenta clothes, her fingers and neck sparkling with jewellery. During the day she would come out to the woods with us to play and swim in the cold river, and during the night she brought us together before the fireplace at the inn to tell stories of Kings and Queens and Wizards and Knights. Of course, we only listened to her stories with the awe of children who think nothing exists beyond the borders of their village. Only later did I learn that the Kings and Queens with their swords and poisons were real, that the Wizards wore glimmering collars and leashes, and that the Knights rarely were more than their words. But as a child, I listened with wide eyes, then played out her stories with my friends.
