073: In the Face of Injustice
You choke on dust. All you can do is beg—beg to walk free, beg to breathe, beg to live. But these people do not care. They do not see you, sprawled beneath their feet. All they see is a silhouette that has reached towards their height. In their eyes, you obstructed the sun that was meant to shine upon them. Why else should they be blessed to wear its colours?
So they trample you.
Your final words are pleas for safety. A broken, "Mama."
But your pleas and your peril has enraged your family—your friends—your community. Us, near and distant. If all we can do is make changes in ourselves, we will. We will speak up with you. We will protest with you. We will believe in a better world where your lives matter.
So we look beyond the colour of our neighbour's skin. We look beyond the pattern of their speech and their language, regardless of what our own might be, and we look beyond our own first reactions. We know injustice when we see it, and we can choose to act against it. We take a stand for life, for equality, and for fairness. We are all human, and from your pain, and the pain of all that have gone before you, you rise. We will not let you choke anymore. You will live to see the sun.
