094: The Wunderkammer
It is a little treasure chest,
filled with wonders from all corners:
dragons' teeth and albatross beaks
next to ivory and pearly sheens;
there are scribbled notes in hieroglyphs
(copied from some foreign cliffs);
books of Eastern medicine
and pens and sabres wrought for show.
But most delightful is the thing
hidden on the upper shelf—
adorned with jewels in a ring,
a box that fiddles by itself.
It takes me back to days forgotten,
when I was really quite besotten
with travels and with foreign lands
and all I knew were my own hands.
