127: I Hope You are Okay

She shuffled her cards together and stuck them in a box as I approached. At least twice my age, she sat in the grass with her head bowed and her jaw tight. It seemed as though she wanted to disappear into the soil. She did not look at me as I passed, but I peered at the box in her hands. Tarot cards. Surprise and sadness welled up inside me. For half a second I considered stopping to give her a smile and ask what kind of tarot cards they were, but then I continued walking. When I reached the end of the park I looked back, but she had disappeared behind a rose bush. Her bowed head and tight jaw played before my eyes. I wished I had stopped to say something, if only to tell her that she need not be ashamed.
