129: In Another Universe
I met a lovely girl in town.
Perfect aliens, we stumbled into each other
outside the coffee shop. She apologised,
then said that I looked beautiful
when a host of stars warred in my eyes.
Startled, I thanked her and asked
where she was from.
Abroad, she said, and I replied
that so did I.
Soon we parted ways, one more bewildered
than the other, but the encounter made me smile.
Belatedly, I realised
that I should have said more. I should have told her
that I thought her lovely, and that I admired
her for complimenting an alien
where she herself was alien.
That her energy delighted, and, like the first summer
day of spring, made the colours
just a little brighter.
Oh well, maybe in another universe.
